Kids Invent Toys
"Kids Invent Toys", a new camp brought into the University of Nebraska-Lincoln by UNL SIFE, consisted of a week long day camp where children grades 4-8 invent a toy, write a brief business plan, create an advertising campaign, and design a web page on their invention. The seventeen students loved coming into their Toy Factory everyday and working on "fun inventions" to play with. Hover boards, free-wheels, basketball chairs, and remote control everything were just a few of their innovations. These inventors were also given a free T-shirt that said "Just Because I PLAY Doesn't Mean I Don't Make MONEY!" The kids loved these shirts. The media, including all four televisions stations (KMTV, KETV, KOLN-TV and Channel 8) and the Lincoln Journal Star and Nebraska Business Journal, came to interview the students and film the toy fair, which was held at the conclusion of the camp. Students learned about science, computer technology, engineering, business and math while inventing their unique toys! It was indeed a complete success and a wonderful way to educate our youth on the opportunities of the free enterprise system! In fact, it was such an outstanding success and demand is so high that UNL SIFE and the Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship plan on hosting two camps this summer! Five SIFE students worked over 200 hours on this project.
